Walk in Peace

20X20X1.5 Acrylic Mixed Media on Wood Board

Walk in Peace is a textural tribute to a remarkable journey of devotion: the 2,300-mile pilgrimage from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., undertaken by Vietnamese Theravada monks from the Huong Dao Center. This work seeks to capture the quiet, persistent energy of that walk, where every step served as a living prayer for global harmony.

The choice of plaster cloth on a deep wood board was essential to reflecting the grit and endurance of such a journey. The medium allows for a sculptural, weathered topography, mimicking the earthen paths and the physical toll of the road. I layered these rising forms in burnt sienna and mustard yellows to represent the traditional robes, setting them against a stark, matte black void to emphasize their unified focus.

The 1.5-inch depth of the board gives the piece a solid, monumental presence, echoing the weight of the monks' mission. By simplifying the figures, I have removed the individual to highlight the collective; the painting stands as a visual anchor for contemplation on the enduring strength required to walk the path of peace.
